Similar to many other local cities, the City of Pomona has a street sweeping program to reduce the amount of pollution reaching its storm drains. Regular street sweeping is one of the most cost-effective methods used to remove debris, sediment, petroleum products, trash and vegetation which accumulate in gutters and on streets. An effective program is important for removing debris which could ultimately end up in the storm drains. Keeping the storm drains clear not only helps to mitigate water pollution, but also reduces the likelihood of flooding during heavy rain.

The City of Pomona provides street sweeping on public streets in neighborhoods at varying times. Signs are posted on neighborhood streets for your scheduled street sweeping. Residents are required to remove their vehicles from the street during this time. Additionally, street sweeping is completed on main thoroughfares throughout the City. Clean streets keep storm drains clear of debris, reduce the potential for flooding, and prevent pollutants from reaching the ocean.

FAQ Section

FAQs

Why are new signs being placed?

Street sweeping signs are being installed throughout the City to ensure curbs are clear of vehicles, allowing the sweeper to remove debris and help keep our City beautiful and clean.

When is the City planning to reveal the covered signs?

While the new signs will be uncovered in June 2025, your original route is effective through the end of June. The new routes are effective July 1, 2025.

Why do I need to move my vehicle during Street Sweeping?

Moving vehicles off the street during designated sweeping days allows for more efficient cleaning.

What happens when streets are not clear?

Not clearing the streets can result in debris building up on the roadway and entering the storm drain which can cause flooding during heavy rains and contribute to water pollution.

Where can I park my vehicle on my street’s sweeping day?

Eash side of the street will have a different designated sweeping day, allowing you to park on the opposite side when it’s your side of the street’s scheduled sweeping day.

When is my sweeping date and/or time?

Street sweeping signs and parking restrictions are posted on each street in the neighborhood. To find your neighborhood's sweeping schedule, refer to the posted signs, view the map located on the City’s website or contact Public Services at (909) 620-3665.

Can residents move leaves or yard waste to the street?

No, please keep leaves, grass clippings, and yard waste off the street and out of the gutter, placing them in your green waste bin.

Why doesn’t the street sweeper use water?

Street sweepers use water primarily to control dust and prevent it from becoming airborne during the sweeping process. If you would like to report no water being used, contact Public Services at (909) 620-3665.

Will I get a ticket if I park on my street after the sweeper has already passed?

Yes, enforcement is based on the day and time indicated on the street signage. While the sweeper may have passed, it might not have finished the entire route or could be in between trips to continue sweeping. From June 1st, 2025, through September 30th, 2025, the City will perform “relaxed enforcement”. Effective October 1, 2025, the City will perform full enforcement.

Do you enforce street sweeping on observed Holidays?

No, we do not enforce on observed* holidays. However, street sweeping will be enforced leading up to and after the observed holiday. For example, if the observed holiday falls on a Tuesday, street sweeping will be enforced Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

*An “observed” holiday refers to specific holidays such as New Year’s Day, MLK Jr. Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Refer to the Holiday Schedule for Street Sweeping Service on the City’s website each year for details.

Can we request to change the placement of the sign?

Please contact Public Services at (909) 620-3665 to request reassessment of sign placement.

Why are citations issued?

Citations are issued when your vehicle is not moved off the street on your scheduled sweeping day / time per sign posted on the street. If there are no signs posted, please contact Public Services at (909) 620-3665
