The Investigative Services Division (ISD) is responsible for investigating crimes occurring in the City. ISD units conduct follow up investigations; proactive investigations related to gangs and major narcotics; and provide real-time investigative resources to officers in the field. ISD personnel are also responsible for maintaining relationships with allied agencies and regional-community partnerships.
Detective Bureau
The Detective Bureau consists of two main sections: Crimes Against Persons and Crimes Against Property. As a whole, the Detective Bureau is comprised of 23 Detectives, 2 Sergeants, and 10 Professional Staff members. Together, they are responsible for the investigation and filing of all criminal cases with the District Attorney's Office. The Detective Bureau also provides resources and support to crime victims and handles all extraditions from other jurisdictions.
Crimes Against Persons
Detectives assigned to Crimes Against Persons investigate specific crimes committed against another person, such as family crimes, sex crimes, and cold cases. The Department also staffs personnel to monitor and track sex registrants (290 PC) living in the City.
Major Crimes Unit
The Major Crimes Unit (MCU) is a specialized unit within Crimes Against Persons. It is comprised of homicide and gang detectives who investigate major crimes, such as robberies, felony assaults, homicides, and attempted homicides. MCU Investigators provide increased intelligence sharing between work units and specialized units.
Crimes Against Property & Missing Persons
Crimes Against Property consists of Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, and Professional Staff that provides follow-up investigation on property crimes reported within the City; assists in the prosecution on cases submitted to the District Attorney's Office; and utilizes investigative resources to identify and prevent crime. Their primary focus is:
- Burglaries
- Thefts
- Financial Crimes
- Auto Theft
- Missing Persons
Additionally, we have Detectives assigned to Los Angeles County's Taskforce for Regional Auto Theft Prevention (TRAP).
CSI: Crime Scene Investigators
Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) specialize in processing and preserving evidence within crime scenes. They evaluate and photograph crime scenes and evidence; and perform basic analysis of blood, ballistic, narcotic and other types of physical evidence. They utilize modern techniques to collect and compare fingerprints; and prepare castings of tire impressions and foot impressions. CSIs also prepare exhibits for professional court presentations and provide expert courtroom testimony.
Major Crimes Task Force
The Police Department relies heavily upon the Major Crimes Task Force (MCTF) to suppress gang violence, investigate drug offenses, and apprehend wanted persons. MCTF works closely with neighboring police agencies and various law enforcement branches, such as the Los Angeles County Probation Department. MCTF is comprised of 2 supervisors and 4 officers.
Real Time Information Center (RTIC)
The Real Time Information Center (RTIC) is comprised of 1 Sergeant and 4 Professional Staff. The RTIC is a centralized hub that integrates live video feeds, license plate reader data, 911 call information, and crime analytics to support our officers in the field. This technology enhances situational awareness, shortens response times, and improves coordination during critical incidents. Staff in the RTIC monitor unfolding events in real time and provide frontline units with timely, actionable information to help prevent and solve crimes faster.
