State of Gun Violence in Pomona

📄 Executive Summary

Violence in Pomona increased following the COVID-19 period, with overall violent crime rising from 2021 through 2024, driven largely by aggravated assaults. Homicide trends fluctuated during this period but declined by 2024.

In response, the City established the Office of Violence Prevention and Neighborhood Wellbeing (OVPNW), implementing a community-centered strategy focused on conflict mediation, targeted outreach, and cross-sector partnerships.

During the period in which these prevention strategies were implemented, gun homicides declined and indicators of serious violence showed signs of stabilization. While the available data do not independently establish causation, the trends are consistent with the goals of violence prevention and intervention efforts.

Although Pomona’s violence rates remain higher than statewide averages, recent reductions in homicide rates suggest progress in reducing the severity of violent incidents and preventing loss of life. Sustained investment in prevention infrastructure, community partnerships, and evidence-based intervention strategies will be important for achieving long-term public safety outcomes.
